While everyone can't work together, it is possible to work with various business types. Here are examples of 3 different business personality types and ways to work with them, to keep your sanity.
Type #1: Older, Highly Successful, and Wealthy
This business personality type has had several successful businesses, in different industries, and are wealthy as a result. They like to share their wisdom, with stories, often throughout the day. They will never miss an opportunity to explain bad situations that they turned into killer money makers. They are deep thinkers, natural problem solvers, and have clearly defined, functional systems in place. They are perfectionists and can be easily frustrated with errors. Morning is when they are most productive.
Ways To Work With Them
- They know what they are talking about, and have a lot of information to share on multiple subjects. It is best if you find them interesting, if you don't then you'll be frustrated all day.
- Follow their lead on how things are done, and as a general rule, never make changes unless asked to do so.
- Don't ever try to read text to them, let them read it themselves. They are more than capable of figuring it out on their own.
- You can take initiative with some assignments, but start out slowly, and gain their trust.
- If you don't understand how to do something, ask questions until you are certain. Remember they love sharing and will be quite unhappy if something is drafted incorrectly.
- Never, under any circumstance, spring something on them at the end of the day, when they are preparing to go home.
Type #2: In Their Late 30's to Early 40's - Easy Going and Love Socializing More Than Money
This business personality type loves their career and that's all that matters. They arrive at work...whenever they get there, and often go for 2 - 3 hour lunches. They spend long hours chatting with their clients, and making money is the last thing on their minds. They're not keen on decision-making, and don't have any systems in place, or very few.
Ways To Work With Them
- You need to become the office manager with this one. Let them deal with client communications and you take care of the rest.
- Slowly set-up systems to keep the office organized. At first, focus on client billing, follow-up procedures and office expenditures.
- Begin drafting precedent letters utilizing their writing style.
- Don't leave important questions or decisions that they have to make until the last-minute, because you are never sure when they will be in the office.
- After a couple of months, ask for a raise, if it is not offered. After all they are making money now with the systems you implemented.
- Never, under any circumstance, do things without discussing it with them first, it is still their business, even though it may not seem like it.
Type #3: Middle Aged - Started Business off With a Bang
This business personality type has completed their education, and launched their business quickly. For years, they had a clear vision in their mind, of what their business would look like. They take part in every aspect of their business, and engaged the systems, although they are not perfected yet. Providing well for their family, is what drives them. Their clients are their main focus at the office, but their family is never far from their mind. They take time off to go to parent teacher interviews, and like to be home by dinner time. This makes them roaring to go first thing in the morning, and they don't stop until the end of the day.
Ways to Work With Them
- This business personality type is very loyal, and expect the same in return. You will probably become an extension of their family.
- You need to keep them as grounded and organized as possible. Try getting files ready for them that you know they will need, and put them in a group.
- Get a sense of their writing style, and try drafting letters in reply to incoming correspondence; they may not like your entire content, at first, but will appreciate the time it will save them.
