What Does it Take to Write a Good Article?

Have you ever come across an article that captured your interest and wondered what it took to write such an article? The answer is quite simple really; a good article is not hard to write, especially if the topic in hand is one of total interest to you. One of the most important things to remember is that if you are not very knowledgeable in the subject of the article to carefully research anything that you might want to include; that way you are not giving speculations but actual facts during the content of the article.

In addition to knowing your topic well, it is also important to keep in mind a few other helpful tips and reminders to making the best article possible. These can include some of the following but are not limited to these: Your article should ideally be interesting, entertaining and informative, eye catching, easy to read, and conversational. Along with adding in your own personality into the article it is important to follow the normal guidelines for writing by answering the five ‘Ws’ as in who, what, where, when, why and sometimes how.

Proper punctuation, grammar and spelling are highly important as these elements can make or break an article; if an article is hard to read then no one will read it. This also goes for using too many big words that no one can pronounce or do not even know the meaning of. Other than poor spelling and English in an article, no one wants to read something that makes them feel as if they are reading a Thesaurus. At the same time though, you can use a Thesaurus to find alternative ways of saying the same thing without overusing the same words.

If an article is given a catchy title then the reader is most likely to read into the start of the article just to see what it is all about. When this happens the author will want to make the rest of the article entertaining just to be able to hold the reader’s attention; that way they will be inclined to read the entire article and not just skim through it. When an article is outstanding enough to snag the attention of everyone who reads it, then the article is considered well written and they will be inclined to share the article with their family, friends, and acquaintances while always looking for more articles by the same author.

No matter how well written an article is, there will always be those people who will just scan through the article looking for the main points. They do this by scanning the entire article looking for keywords or key phrases that jump out at them letting them know that they are of importance. If there aren’t any points that stick out, through bolding, underlining, or italicizing then the article might be considered of little interest to such people and they generally won’t bother to read through its entirety to pick out the main points.

This brings up the matter of keywords and phrases; these supporting parts to any article are considered important in some circles. Not just for the fact that there are those people who refuse to read an entire article because they cannot pick out the keywords, but also because of search engines being able to pick them up when a set of keywords has been used to generate search results. However, never distort an article by artificially inserting keywords. It is more important to write naturally.

Another good thing to keep in mind when making your article conversational is to keep things simple; by doing this you will keep all sentences and paragraphs short, sweet, and to the point. Things are done this way to keep the reader reading the article, if things get too lengthy or too wordy then they will lose interest and move onto the next article. It can be a challenge to keep things to a minimum when there is so much to write about; but that is the beauty of writing articles; if one topic has multiple parts to it, they can be broken down into multiple smaller articles which branch off from the main one. This allows the author to fully explain everything that they feel they need to get out there for the readers to enjoy.

In school, you may have been taught to always follow the five “Ws” rule, which is the who, what, where, when, why, and sometimes how. This is done for the simple reason of being able to cover all possible angles for the article, without leaving too much for the reader to figure out on their own. Sometimes these will not always apply to the topic in hand, which is okay though; for not every subject out there can be applied to all of these elements.

Other things to keep in mind when writing an effective article is to come in with a strong introductory paragraph, keep the strength throughout the entire body and finish off with a strong conclusion. This should keep the entire article uniform. Also, a good conclusion might sum up all the points in the article into one paragraph as a recap of what the reader just read. The last step to writing an article is to proofread what you have written; sometimes it helps to put yourself in the shoes of your readers and re-read what has been written as if you had never seen the article before. This generally helps you catch small mistakes that you might have overlooked while writing the article. Even better, and if you have time get a friend or acquaintance to proofread and edit the article for you.

As you can see, there are many different elements that have to work hand in hand to make for a well written article. By keeping these things in mind when you attempt to write your own article, you will find that it is really quite simple to come up with a successfully written article that captivates the readers and gets the main objectives across. Following the above suggestions and guidelines you can learn to write your own articles on those topics that you have prior knowledge in, or even those that you know very little about but are willing to research.
