Your friend or relative is expecting a new arrival and it's time for the fun of shopping for new baby gifts. The problem may be that perhaps you've never shopped for a baby before, or you otherwise simply just don't know what to get the new baby.

If you're considering baby clothing, even if someone has gotten another set of the same thing, no problem. The parents will still be grateful because babies go through things quickly. Let's take a look at some suggestions though and perhaps give you a few ideas to consider.
The first thing that you need to consider is your budget. This will help you to narrow down the huge selection a bit, and make things somewhat easier.

Now, one thing you might want to try to do is to find out if the mother of the new baby has registered with any of the many registries that can be found in the larger stores. As someone purchases an item on the list, it is automatically removed, so that the only things left on it are things that are still needed by the mom. Now, if this is not available to you as an option, then ask around. Chances are you know many of the same people that the baby's mom knows, and you'll be able to find out which new baby gifts they have bought. This method is not foolproof, and you still may end up buying a second item that is the same, but as previously mentioned, if you are buying clothing, it won't matter so much because babies go through things quickly.

The easiest thing besides the baby registry is if there is going to be a baby shower. In this manner, one person could act as the coordinator and help the mom to be to compile a list of things she will need for the baby. The list can then be distributed among those who will be attending, and everyone can touch base with the coordinator who will then be in charge of marking things off as they are bought.
There will be many cases where the baby shower is not held, or you won't be able to attend for one reason or another. In this case, rather than looking at something fashionable, then you may opt to go functional. Many people are tempted to buy toys, and this is fine, but truthfully it will be at least a few months before the baby is ever able to consider playing with them.  Parents appreciate all gifts that are received, but the best gifts quite honestly are the ones that are helpful and useful to the parents. Consider the items on this list:

• Diapers. These are appreciated as new baby gifts because they help the new parents to save money. It's practical and useful as every baby needs diapers.
• Clothing is always needed. If you are concerned that too many of a particular item is bought, consider that most babies can never have enough one piece underwear and any other clothes for that matter. Babies are sometimes changed 3 or 4 times a day, so having plenty of extra clothing on hand will make the new mom and dad grateful.
• One thing many people never consider, and the parents are ecstatic about is a night out. You can make your gift to them one in which you watch over the baby for a few hours. They can then use this time for together time, or a night out to dinner, or even just to stay home and get some sleep. Any parent would be happy with such a gift, because if you are a parent yourself, you know there is a lot of lost sleep taking    care of a new baby. This is a gift that would be hard to beat, because there will be many cases where they are operating on 3 hours of sleep at most.
• Gift baskets are another perfect gift that are full of useful products. The basket itself could be a diaper bag, or a basket that extra diapers could be saved in or something along those lines. You would then fill it with all the necessities such as baby oil, baby lotion, powder, diapers and even a toy or two. Teddy bears fit into these beautifully and may even become the baby's favorite toy.
