Roofing Contractors in Vancouver Should Not Climb onto Your Roof when Giving an Estimate

Roofing contractors in Vancouver can and really should be giving out an estimate from the ground if and when at all possible. The damage one can cause when walking on an old roof makes one realise that some old fashioned algebra can be a better plan than having to repair an emergency leak.

There are many products out there but let's start with the most used in Vancouver and that is Asphalt roofing. Asphalt roofing is extremely soft under warm conditions. With a sunny sky and a temperature higher than 15 degrees Celsius, walking on an asphalt roof can be disastrous as foot prints are left behind and tiny little holes appear. Lots of holes that weren’t there before. The other issue is that when the roofer scrapes their foot along the shingle and tears pieces off - One tear on your roof and you have a leak.

Cedar shake curls as it ages due to high moisture running past the cedar shakes. From in the home, the cedar curls from it’s edges upwards. Over a period of time if someone walks on a roof with curled cedar every step splits a shake and you don’t have one leak but a whole lot of leaks from hundreds of split shakes all damaged in a space of 15 minutes.

Moss grows on asphalt and cedar so when someone walks on a roof, make sure they are not uprooting the moss that has rooted itself into you roofing product. Slate roofing is as fragile as glass and should be treated as such.

Metal can bend and dent if a roofing contractor walks on it with little care or concern. Make sure that if someone has to walk onto the roof that they take care not to disturb the current roof.

It is completely possible to measure and prepare an estimate from the ground. All it takes is a little bit of algebra knowledge. A roofer will have to climb to the eave if they are trying to determine how many layers of roof there are and what kind of deck you have.

There are a few roofs out there that need to be measured from the roof due to the fact there is no access from the ground all around the home. In this situation be ready to have your roof changed ASAP.
