All you want is the leak to stop, so a repair is one choice you have. It is pretty simple when it comes to roofing. If your roofing contractor or company did your roof in the last ten years and your roof is leaking then the problem will never go away. It is a workmanship error and the same problem exists throughout your roof. If your roof is older than fiftteen years and is leaking than its time for a new roof.

Don’t get me wrong a roof has the potential to last a lifetime. A roof leak is a sign that the very problem you have in the spot that is leaking is probably happening in many places. The water just hasn’t made it through yet.

As a rule, go with a company that has been around for more than 5 years. If they have had the ability to last that long in business they probably know what they are doing. The average roofing crew is about five to eight people. Each has a different duty with a crew captain. A good roofing crew will bring tarps and plywood to protect shrubs, swimming pools and all the other stuff which may sit on your property. Nowadays there are plenty of magnetic rakes that a roofer should use to pick up old rusty nails around your property. Ensure he or she does this or someone will get injured. Your gutters should be cleaned by the roofer after the job is complete. Keep an eye on your gutters.  Ladders tend to cause damage if arms are not applied.

 That is why it is so important to ask certain questions and call at least three roofing contractors. Three so you can compare apples with apples and know what this apple is supposed to look like, how it is supposed to work and how much they really cost. Every company should offer Liability insurance and workman’s compensation  as a service to the customer. Check to see if they are on the Better Business Bureau and if they have changed the company name recently. About half the roofing companies in Metro Vancouver use this trick.

At the end of the day there is so much more the roofer should know and apply without informing you. A good roofer will measure the area attic and apply the correct amount of vents to meet building code. A good roofer will follow the specs for the product you have chosen to go on your home. Each and every product has different applications with different nail sizes. There are stronger ways of dealing with rake edges, valleys and skylights. These are issues no home owner has ever discussed with me yet. This is probably the first spot the roof will leak.
